SAT Exam Guide for International Students

Your Gateway to Top US Universities Starts Here

The SAT is one of the most recognised standardised tests for undergraduate admissions in the United States. For international students aiming at American universities, from state colleges to Ivy League institutions, a competitive SAT score can significantly strengthen your application and open the door to merit-based scholarships. Since March 2024, the SAT has been offered exclusively in a digital format worldwide.

Digital SAT Format

The digital SAT is approximately 2 hours and 14 minutes long. It uses an adaptive format at the module level; your performance in the first module determines the difficulty of the second, giving strong performers a higher score ceiling.

SAT vs ACT

Both the SAT and the ACT are widely accepted at all major US universities. The SAT has no Science section; the ACT includes one. The SAT's Reading and Writing section focuses more on close reading and rhetoric, while the ACT's English section has more grammar. If you are stronger in maths and science, consider the ACT. Many students take a practice test for each and choose based on the results.

Preparation Tips

  • Start with an official diagnostic test from the College Board to establish your baseline

  • The adaptive format rewards accuracy in the first module. Do not rush

  • Khan Academy's free official SAT preparation (built with College Board) is highly effective

  • Aim to take the SAT at least twice: most students improve on their second attempt

  • International students can sit at designated test centres. Check the College Board's website for nearby locations
