IELTS Exam Guide for International Students

The World's Most Recognised English Test

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is the world's most widely accepted English proficiency exam. Over 12,000 organisations in more than 140 countries recognise IELTS scores, including universities, governments, employers, and immigration authorities. If you are planning to study, work, or migrate abroad, IELTS is almost certainly on your list.

IELTS Academic vs IELTS General Training

There are two versions of the test. IELTS Academic is required for most undergraduate and postgraduate university admissions, as well as for skilled migration to Australia and the UK. IELTS General Training is used for secondary school admissions, work experience programs, and some migration pathways, but is generally not accepted for university entry. Always check if your institution or visa program requires Academic or General Training before you register.

Test Format

IELTS tests four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Total test time is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. Paper-based and computer-based IELTS are both available. Computer-based results arrive in 3-5 days; paper results in 13 days.
