Working Holiday Visa: Subclass 417 and 462

The Working Holiday Visa is one of Australia's most loved programs it lets young adults from eligible countries live, work, and travel in Australia for up to a year, with the possibility of extending to 2 or even 3 years through regional work. Subclass 417 is for citizens of traditional partner countries; Subclass 462 covers additional nationalities through the Work and Holiday program.

Key Requirements

β€’ Aged 18–30 (or 35 for some countries) at time of application

β€’  Citizen of an eligible country (417: UK, Germany, France, Ireland, etc.; 462: USA, China, India, check current list)

β€’   No dependent children travelling with you

β€’   Hold sufficient funds for the trip (at least AUD 5,000 recommended)

β€’   Hold a return or onward travel ticket (or sufficient funds)

β€’  Health insurance recommended (not Medicare eligible)

Who is This Visa For?

Young adults aged 18–30 (or 18–35 for some nationalities) from eligible countries. Must not have previously held a working holiday visa for Australia, be without dependent children accompanying you, and meet health and character requirements.

Visa Conditions and Key Details

β€’   Work rights: Can work for any employer, but maximum 6 months with one employer

β€’   Study: Up to 4 months

β€’   Second Year: Complete 3 months (88 days) specified regional work in first year

β€’   Third Year (417 only): Complete an additional 6 months of specified regional work in the second year

β€’   Tax: Working holiday makers pay 15% flat tax rate on income up to AUD 45,000

Processing Time and Cost

β€’   Processing Time: 75% within 1 day for most nationalities; 90% within 29 days

β€’   Visa Application Charge: AUD 650 (2024–25)
