Skills in Demand Visa: Subclass 482

Launched in December 2023 as the replacement for the Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa, the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand Visa is Australia's primary employer-sponsored temporary work visa. It comes in three streams based on salary and occupation, and critically, all streams offer a direct pathway to permanent residency via the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme.

Key Requirements

β€’  An approved Australian standard business sponsor (ASBS) employer must nominate you

β€’  Occupation must be in the relevant stream occupation list

β€’  Relevant skills, qualifications, and at least 2 years' work experience

β€’  Salary at or above the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT AUD 73,150 in 2024–25)

β€’  Skills in Demand stream: TSMIT to below AUD 135,005 (salary-based, broader occupations)

β€’  Core Skills stream: ANZSCO skill levels 1–3 on the Core Skills Occupation List

β€’  Specialist Skills stream: AUD 135,005+ (any occupation, very broad)

β€’  English proficiency requirements vary by stream

Who is This Visa For?

An approved Australian employer is sponsoring skilled workers. The Skills in Demand visa replaced the TSS (482) visa but kept the same visa subclass number with improved conditions, including enhanced PR pathways and reduced minimum employment periods.

Visa Conditions

β€’  Duration: Up to 4 years (Skills in Demand / Core Skills) or up to 4 years (Specialist Skills)

β€’  Work rights: Must work for the sponsoring employer in the nominated occupation

β€’  After 2 years (reduced from 3): eligible to apply for 186 PR via Transition Stream

β€’  Can transfer to a new sponsor mid-visa with a new nomination

β€’  Bring dependants who have unlimited work rights

Processing Time and Cost

β€’  Processing Time: 75% within 7 weeks; 90% within 5 months

β€’  Visa Application Charge: AUD 3,115 (2024–25) primary applicant; depends on stream
