English Test Requirements for Australia 2026: IELTS, PTE, TOEFL and OET

Find out exactly what IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, and OET scores you need to study in Australia. Compare requirements by course level and university updated for 2026.

Why English Proficiency Matters

English language proficiency is a mandatory requirement for both Australian university admission and the student visa (Subclass 500). Your test score must meet the minimum threshold set by your university AND the Department of Home Affairs; both requirements apply independently.

The most widely accepted tests in Australia are IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, and OET (for healthcare-specific programs). Accepted scores vary by course level and institution.

Student Visa (Subclass 500) English Requirements

The Department of Home Affairs sets its own English benchmarks for visa grants, separate from university admission requirements. For the Subclass 500 student visa, IELTS 5.5 overall (with no band below 5.0) is typically sufficient for most courses. Higher-risk applications or certain course levels may require 6.0.

Important: Your score must be no older than 2 years at the time of visa application. Plan your test accordingly if you're applying in early 2026; a test from late 2022 may be too old.

Tips to Improve Your Score

Start preparation early: Allow 8–12 weeks of structured study before your test date, not just revision in the final week.

Take a mock test first: Identify your weakest section (speaking, writing, reading, or listening) before committing to a full preparation plan.

Consider test-specific coaching: IELTS and PTE have different question formats. IELTS preparation doesn't automatically transfer to PTE.

Book strategically: IELTS is offered more frequently than PTE in smaller cities in India and Nepal. Check local availability before deciding.

What If You Don't Meet the Score?

Don't delay your application; there are structured pathways. English language programs at Australian universities (EAP English for Academic Purposes) range from 10 to 30 weeks and, on completion, guarantee entry to the affiliated university course without requiring a further IELTS or PTE test.
